When you start learning Chinese it can be a little intimidating with all the apps available to help you learn. The truth is some people get a big benefit from apps while others prefer to use other learning methods. Saying that, there are two useful apps that every Chinese learner can use to their advantage.
Pleco is a Chinese dictionary App which originally came out for the Palm Pilot nearly 20 years ago. The team at Pleco have a long experience in delivering a great user experience for Chinese language learners. Pleco actually grew out of it’s founder Michael Love and his difficulty using paper dictionaries and forgetting characters. Forgetting characters doesn’t help you learn faster so he hacked together some ingenious software and created his own digital dictionary. Soon his fellow students started using his software and eventually it became the thriving business it is today. The basic Pleco App is free but you can add on many paid for extras and the app itself can support optical character readers and flashcard systems. Find out more at https://www.pleco.com/
Spaced repetition software is a scientific learning and memory approach that can be applied to learning Chinese. Anki ( https://apps.ankiweb.net/ ) is one of the most popular apps for spaced repetition and is very popular among our students. From using it as little as 10-20 minute per day our students have reported much better uptake of characters and faster memorisation. Anki is free on android but paid on IOS. Straight out of the box you can load HSK vocab or you can add as you go from whichever book you are using in class.
