It is no coincidence Huayang Academy decided to set up in Yunnan province. The local climate, culture and people lead us to set up three language schools in Yunnan. Our experience with students learning Chinese in Yunnan has given us a great insight into how foreign students view China. So let’s have a look at the top reasons to study Chinese in Yunnan.
One of the top reasons every student gives us whether they study in Dali, Lijiang or Kunming is the weather. Learning Chinese in an environment where you can enjoy the outdoors can make your experience better. Aside from a couple of weeks of cold weather ( 5c lows ) and the rainy season in August/September the weather is dry and mild. Contrast this with other areas in China such as the steamy south or the sub zero winters in the north you will be quite comfortable in Yunnan.
Kunming, Dali and Lijiang are in a frontier province in Southwest China but they are great places to base yourself if you want to explore the region. Dali and Kunming are linked up to China’s titanic high-speed rail network. Anyone who hasn’t been on a high-speed rail will be astounded with the speed and efficiency. Apart from rail connections Kunming Changshui International airport is a fantastic modern airport with links that can bring you to Vietnam, India, Cambodia and Thailand sometimes for less than $50 each way!
3) Cost of Living
The cost of living in Yunnan province is very low by Western standards. A semester of Chinese lessons at our school is only 5,000 rmb per semester which works out around $720. Apart from low tuition costs an average two bedroom apartment will set you back around $200 per month. Food and drink is also very cheap for example you can have a great meal for around 15rmb which is about $2. Couple this with the abundance of free outdoor activities like cycling, climbing and hiking and you can live in Yunnan for cheap with a high quality of life.
4) History and Culture
Yunnan province has a history stretching back millennia. Visit some of the old villages on the tea-horse road or some of the fantastic museums in the province to unlock some of the fascinating history of the region. Yunnan is also home to 25 of China’s 56 official ethnic minorities which will lead you to some fascinating and eye opening encounters.
5) Clean Air
It is pretty sad to admit but one of the big reasons Yunnan attracts expats is the clean air. Unfortunately many Chinese cities suffer from bad air quality which can have a negative effect on your time here. While in some parts of Kunming the construction of the new metro can cause a lot of dust these areas are easy to avoid.
6) International Community
In each city which has a Huayang Academy there is a great international community. This is a big thing for many newcomers to China. Finding other people trying to learn and live in the middle kingdom is a big help when you first arrive and throughout your stay in China.
7) Standard Chinese
Every region in China has dialects but since Yunnan has a history of people coming from all over China the dialect is close to standard mandarin. Since there are many travellers, adventurers and tourists coming to Yunnan from all over China you will get the chance to meet people from all over and get a good understanding of how to communicate.
